Wiper motor Empty Wiper motor

Trying to figure out why my wiper motor doesn't work. I've just installed it.

The earth and power are good.
There are three terminals on the end of the motor: 1,2, and earth.

When I had the switch wired to 1 and power to 2 nothing happened.
When I unplugged the power from 2 (I had to put in an extra line for this) and tried again it blew the fuse.

Any ideas?

Have you looked at the wiring diagram? Is it a single speed or two speed motor?

It's a mk1 motor as originally fitted, so I think it's a single speed.
I think it has self parking in it as there is a wire running out of the motor to a contact on the top of the gear box.

I had a similar problem with the Hornet I just bought. Wipers would not work. I tested the switch, I checked for voltage to the motor and those were just fine. So I loosened the four 1/4 inch bolts that hold the wiper cover on (just a couple of turns) and tapped gently on the round dome with the wire going to it (that's the self parking switch connection, I believe). Then I tightened the cover bolts and it worked. Sometimes the connection between the wiper cover and that round dome gets all grotty, and makes the motor think it should park and it already is, so it doesn't move -- or at least that's what I think happened.

Sounds worth a try. I did clean out and regrease the box before putting it in the car as it was very grotty when I got it.

I had a sudden thought... The motor was made in the days of positive earth and the car is now negative earth.
So I moved the connections and had it running, but it was running all the time the ignition was on. I swapped the connections again and it's gone back to blowing fuses.
Now I know it works in there somewhere, but my wiring is not right for it.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a single-speed, self parking wiper motor of positive earth origin?

Hi

aside from the earth, one of the wires is the switch wire from the dash, the other is a permanent live feed (well ignition live) to the self park on the gear wheel. Is it the old square type with the extra wire on top of the wheel box, or a modern round one ? - if it is the modern one just follow the later diagram from haynes. If it is earlier then I think the ign live is the one to the top of the wheel house. Should be easy to test one live should make the motor continually rotate, the other should only let it rotate a partial turn or not at all (depending where the wheel box stops)

There are three terminals on the wiper. One is Power and the other two are ground. One is for grounded through the wiper switch and the other is for the self parking of the wipers. In my MGA days I found the this simplified wiring diagram and notes helpful in understanding and troubleshooting the wiper motor.

I think the one I fitted is different to Jims diagram, or I wired it up wrong Rolling Eyes , but it works, so please ignore my earlier post (the problem with doing things from memory) and follow Jims Diagram

We have a winner! Thanks all!

The final verdict is: it works following Jim's diagram. It is the old square type, with a wire coming from the park contact on top of the gear box and disappearing into the opposite end of the motor from the main wires.

Connection 1 is for the switch connected to earth.
Connection 2 is a live wire from the fuse box and ignition switch.
And surprisingly the earth is connected to earth.

On a side note, none of the diagrams in Haynes or my manuals identify which connections the wires go to. They just identify the wires going to the motor.
