Anyone know what is the oldest surviving Elf????
Been a member here for a long time....thought I should ask this question as I still own an early 62 MK1 Elf that is totally original and no RUST!
Chartreuse yellow/Florentine blue roof...never been touched other than driven and serviced...had 38K miles from new....car is documented from the dealer and I am the second owner (since 1973)

Oldest Elf!!! Empty Your Car

Post  Bryanthemercman Tue Aug 28, 2018 10:46 pm

Hi,

I think the prize should go to you for the oldest surviving Elf which I assume is an 850?. Mine is a 1966 and well its just a bare shell at the moment after bodges done over the years but its getting there. You have very low mileage for such a old car do you ever put it on the road?

Really!
I thought there might be some 61 cars still around. Yes, 850 engine....mystery gear lever LOL! The car hasn't ben driven since 1973 when I drove it home from the first owner.
It has been sitting in my shop since then...dusty but all there. This car came into Canada by mistake...was shipped to Montreal (LHD) ...no dealers wanted it as it was way too expensive compared to a regular mini. My uncle owned the dealership here...he finally took the car and tried to sell it. It sat on his lot till the Spring of 1964!!!! He sort of give it away!
Will post a couple of pictures soon

Put our two cars next to each other and they would almost look the same. My Mk I, with the same colours, was built a little later -- October 1962. Mine is also in excellent condition and has only 33k miles on it.

Was your car exported to the US or imported privately?

The car was built in England and shipped to Henlys Limited, Bournemouth, Hampshire 4 December 1962. The car had one owner who traded in the Elf for a later Mini, and regretted it, as the story goes. It was bought by someone in England that knew it was something I would like. He was correct. I bought it from him becoming the 3rd owner; although, he bought it only to sell it on.

So, your Elf must be a RHD car......as far as I know...they never exported an Elf or a Hornet to North America...that is what makes my car sort of 'special'....a genuine LHD car...shows on the heritage certificate as well. As I mentioned above.....according to what I was told by the dealership.....it wa shipped to Montreal by mistake.....making it the only LHD Elf to come in to N. America...
If anyone has better information regarding this...please update the thread.

It would be great to see some photos 348ts. I assume the good (dry) weather is the reason you and Cheleker have no rust?

Been a member here for a long time....thought I should ask this question as I still own an early 62 MK1 Elf that is totally original and no RUST!
Chartreuse yellow/Florentine blue roof...never been touched other than driven and serviced...had 38K miles from new....car is documented from the dealer and I am the second owner (since 1973)

The book I have indicates that production proper of the Mk1 Elfs started in January 1962 with vehicle R-A2S1-156851. Where does yours fit numerically?

Must try to get a few pictures of my car on the site.
Anyone know how to do this???
My Elf was built April 26th 1962
Body number FR654.....
Engine number 1437
Not sure the chassis numbers went up in sequence.....anyone know if the hornet and the Elf shared the same sequence of chassis numbers??

Elf and Hornet chassis numbers seem to have been allocated sequentially in the same series for each of the three Marks, differentiated by the use of the brand and mark prefix applicable (Wolseley or Riley, A2S1, A2S2, or A2S3 (LHD units had a "L" suffix to the prefix). ISBN978-1-906133-66-5 (Ch 9) provides a lot of useful information.

i have an elf with body number 105, I'm not sure how far along the chassis numbers it was but the body must be fairly early.
