I'm going down there to put a punt on it too. I reckon the estimate is rather underestimated.

That makes the one that's in eBay at the moment look like a bargain!

Re: Heinz 57 for auction at Beaulieu
This is a recent trend in auctions, that is pretty much unexplainable. Unrestored, neglected cars reaching prices of freshly restored examples.
I would pay over the odds for an unrestored but well kept car in roadworthy condition and a lot of patina that cannot be reproduced, but not for a shed.....

Re: Heinz 57 for auction at Beaulieu
that sure is a lot of money! factor in the restoration cost and the buyer will be lucky to have a car that's worth what they spent on it - but sometimes it's not just about the money. at least it's another one saved...
Re: Heinz 57 for auction at Beaulieu
I think that classic cars and wine are being seen as a better investment than shares and property at the moment, hence the prices being acheived.
And I guess that if you put the money into restoring a rotten one you'll know that it's done properly. Spending big money on one thats full of filler isn't much fun (from first hand experience!)
The advantge of that car is that you've got the provenance - if Bonams are prepared to say it's a genuine Heinz Hornet, then it probably is.

Mad
Thats a mad price! I would only have expected that price for a showroom condition restoration.
What do you think is a fair price? Remembering that Practical Classics still only list a mint top grade hornet / elf as £4500!

Re: Heinz 57 for auction at Beaulieu
a mint "Heinz" could expect to go for up to £20k in my opinion so the fella may be hard pressed to make a profit on it, but it may have been bought as a labour of love and it is possible that a mint one would make much more than my £20k estimate as i don't think a "nice one" has been sold in quite a while?!
Re the Heinz 57
Thanks for leting me know about this whilst at Castle Coombe. Having just managed to see all the info on this motor,I'm uping the insurance & value on my 57. The wife wants to sell (no chance) knew I shouldn't of showed her the info! Prices are silly on the classic car sceine recently......but as this is in my favour I'm all for it!

Crayford Hornet replica
Having not being able to but a Henz 57 Hornet I have been playing with the idea of creating a replica. Crayford apparently converted quite a few mini's of the same era. I expect that the hood and body strengthening are the same. If there was one beyond restoration and being scraped it would be an interesting project to then to the same as Crayford did. Cut the roof off and put an hood on.
