Gear Selection / Gearbox

Ernie let me down about a month ago on returning from Kensington, London I pulled away from a set of Traffic lights and speeded up 1st, 2nd and then found I could not select 3rd or 4th gears my magic wand was not magic anymore. I let the engine cool down and found I could select 3rd & 4th once more and nursed him home using a bit of brute force.
The following morning I found could once again select all gears from cold. I asked my local and best friend Mini mechanic if he could suggest why this is happening as Ernie is not overheating, he was baffled also so Ernie has been left with him to remove the engine, gearbox to try and identify the issue.
