Gearbox problems Empty Gearbox problems

Hi All,

I went to see a car for sale this evening and on the test drive I noticed the gear lever juddered back and forth as I pulled away and there was a loud whine (almost like a straight cut Gearbox) on medium acceleration that was particularly noticeable in 1st and 2nd. Is this a problem or not?
