Okay, I'll be the first to ask. How are you planning to put the petrol in?

Re: GIZMO My 67 Hornet
You managed to weld that without going BOOM ?
I realise why you have done that, I wanted to change my tank for a larger capacity until I found the filler neck was wrong angle for Elf. Now I'm wondering wether to do same but leave original neck on body to keep it original?
I would like to make a point here. On second thoughts. My tank spills petrol when taking roundabouts fast so how will you stop yours spilling into boot everytime you accelerate away after topping up
Also, won't the boot hinge foul the tank

Just take regular brakes and if you hear any funny sound Ruuuunnnn
The hinge just miss`s it by 2cms.
As for the spilling ill just have to see what happens or even make something up
Re: GIZMO My 67 Hornet
...speaking of extra fuel capacity, I have a second Elf/Hornet tank as a Right Hand tank rather than a bigger single tank. Because the filler pipe is (almost) perpendicular to the side of Elfie, it was just a simple matter to spin the tank around and make a new tank filler hole in the RHS rear wing, poke the tank through the side having made up opposites of the boot floor mountings and use an original but modified tank strap to hold it down (methinks I use two of the "longer" straps and bolted them as per the LHS.) . Making the hole in the side was done by dispensing with the old adage of "measure TWICE and cut ONCE" and substituting "measure SIX times and cut ONCE...in fact I cut the hole a little smaller and kept increasing the diameter to the size required by the filler neck grommet in little stages, thus keeping the hole centralised to the required position. I used two SU fuel pumps mounted on opposite sides of the subrame where the fuel feeds from each tank to the appropriate pump and thence to a steel "T" piece and then to the main fuel line. Due to the nature of the valves on each pump, they act as non-return valves so it is impossible to pump from one tank to the other (and thence out of the filler neck ont' road) unless the valves fail (never happened to me in 20yrs (touch wood - mmmmm my head is handy!)). The pumps are switched by a 2-way double pole centre-off switch (from Maplins) with the fuel tank gauges wired up to the other pole so I can a)select a pump and b) know how much fuel is in the selected tank. When I walk away from the car, centre off means if I ever forget to set the alarm, any one who attemps to steal it isn't going to get more a couple of miles before the float chambers run dry....and maybe won't have the gumption to know why its stopped. I have use SS braided reinforced rubber pipes for the connections and metal pipes for the longer runs within the boot. The only problem I have is that the bottom fuel outlet pipe from the RH tank is only about 6" from the back of the car so may well be vulnerable if some IJOT rear-ends me.....one day I may move the pipe to the forward end of the tank if I ever get brave enough to re-braze it without it going "boom".
Cheers
Alan
PS my boot is sealed off from the pax compartment as required by FAI motorsport regulations (in case I ever decided to go "Stage" rallying - I didn't .......but it was a good safety feature). This is something I would do if I had to fill my tank(s) by opening the bootlid!
Cheers

I've been under the impression that the main difference is the angle of the filler neck, and slicing the neck off and rewelding at the proper angle wouldn't seem like that bad a job. Much less modding than moving the neck inside the boot.

Re: GIZMO My 67 Hornet
I have a 35lts tank in my Hornet. the hinge did fouled on it, had to modify it to suit. Also had to recut the boot board naturaly.
I have not velded the tank neck, rather i have just "adjusted" it angle by bending it a bit . The only downside that the filler cap is now very close to the chassis.

Re: GIZMO My 67 Hornet
How did you modify the tank to suit the hinge. A dent on the top? Can you provide a photo of the boot showing it?

Re: GIZMO My 67 Hornet
I have removed the plate securing the hinge from the bootlid (some dremmeling/cutting as it is bolted+velded for some funny reason). I have turned the plate around. Also removed the hinge and repositioned it drilling new holes into the parcel self and moved the hinge from the left to the right side of the securing plate.

Re: GIZMO My 67 Hornet
I've got a right hand tank in my Elf now. It's a standard mini setup but with a modified filler neck.
I measured up the Elf neck on the left side so I could make a mirror copy for the right. Unfortunately the standard mini filler neck is not long enough to just cut it at an angle, spin the end round, and weld it down. I had to buy a right hand tank and a scrap tank for the filler neck. The good news is: Now it's done it does look very nice!
