MK III lock barrels Empty MK III lock barrels

Post  MGs Wed Dec 08, 2010 5:10 pm

Anyone know where I can get hold of a pair of door lock barrels?

I phoned Somerford Minis because I was ordering some other stuff from them. They say
they can't confirm the ones they have will fit.

Mini spares lock

I have just been told that these don't fit either. Mini spares say that you can fit the push button
mini handles with locks, but even these need a lot of modification. Doesn't ring true to me. I can't
believe that they went to so much trouble in the factory. I'm pretty sure they would have just
picked bits off the shelf.

Are you saying that the barrels from the Mini don't fit in the Elf handles, or something else? I've got some spares of each in my garage, I'll try and find time to experiment tomorrow.

According to the guys I have called, both at the mini spares suppliers and the technical guy from the Riley Motor club, the barrels
don't fit the handles. You can use the new mini handles, but even these need modification. I don't see the point in buying a pair
of new handles and then having to bodge them to fit. Apparently, as the Elf went to push button and integrated locks before
the Mini, these were a sort of prototype and not the same ones as used on the Mini. At least the boot lock is still available new.
I'm planning on taking the door cards out and checking the mechanisms are connected before I go any further.

I have a funny feeling that it is the end that pushes the door catch mechanism that is different going by the parts books. It may be possible to modify. Sommerford do list them on their parts website however under that part number - item 4 sommerford pdf - how relevant it is to what they keep in stock is anyones guess tho

I talked to the guy at somerford, he was pretty sure they wouldn't fit. I'll try and remove one, photograph it
and send pictures to the suppliers to see if they can match it

MK III lock barrels Empty On the topic of locks

Post  MGs Tue Dec 28, 2010 2:36 pm

Just dismantled the boot lock, as I don't have a key for it. It has a 3 digit number stamped on it.
Is this the key number and if so is it an FS? I know that there are series such as FT. I'm guessing
FS as the other keys are in this series.

Yes this should be the key number - I would presume it is FS, but would not like to be 100% certain

Cheers. I have found some keys with the right number, at a good price, so I will give it a go.
Cheaper than changing the whole lot.

Just need to dismantle a door lock now.

MK III lock barrels Empty Hmmm

Post  MGs Tue Dec 28, 2010 5:56 pm

Just dismantled the drivers side door panel and door handle. The key and inside operating lever are working (some of the time).
The problem seems to be the metal bracket (attached to the back of the lock) which grabs the round metal bar from the
operating lever. It is bent and not catching the lever. So no matter how you turn the key the lock is not engaging with the catch.

Having looked at mini door handles, they will not fit. The mounting screw for the rear of the handle is at the edge of the
door (behind the catch plate) on the elf. It is in the middle of the lock mechanism on a mini. Looks like I will have to get
a spare key for the existing lock (as I still haven't found any new ones to fit) and have a new bracket made.

Lets hope the passenger side is easier to fix

Very Happy

Sounds like you have some way of locking the car. Can't take ours anywhere, as I can't lock either of the doors, from inside or out, or the boot Sad

At least I'm not putting any miles on it, having it sat in the garage.

Sorry! I should have said There is no key access on the passenger doors of MK 1 and MK2. They have a small lever to lock them on the inside!

Have you had any luck with your lock situations? My MkIII has no keys. Not for the doors, boot, or even the ignition. Of course, the only key I have is for the Fuel Cap. So that helps....lol.

Have a look and see if there is a 3 digit number on the front of the ignition switch - if it has then this is your key number

Unfortunately, there are no numbers on any of the barrels. I wonder if I should just re-key them all via locksmith as previously suggested.

I didn't think you could get the barrels out without inserting the key?

A locksmith could certainly make up a key for a barrel that's removed from the housing; I could do that myself.

The numbers should be stamped on the back of the lock barrel so that they're not visible from outside.

I've replaced the keys and most barrels on my MkII. I didn't need the keys to remove them. The boot was held in by a circlip at the back, the ignition by a spring loaded pin in the back of the barrel pushed by a nail through a small hole in the housing, and the door was held by something like a split pin through the back of the barrel and the square shaft. If I remember correctly. I hope that's some help.
