Boot sealing rubber

Has anyone replaced the boot seal on your car? If so, what did you use and where did you get it?

I bought mine at one of the shows £12
I have also used www.phoenixminitrim.com for other bits. Their latest catalogue has the price at £3.20/metre and you will require 3.10 metre=£9.92 (Cat REF DX72)

I sent them an email, but their website seems to be down. Do you know if they're still in business?

They have mentioned the website had been having problems.
They may take a little time to answer emails,as they are often away at shows. I had some stuff of them about a month ago.

They actually got right back to me and gave me a price. Problem is the shipping is twice the cost of the seal. I might try to find a source more local to me before I shell out the money.

you could always try the scrapyards - i've heard that mk 2 golf boot rubbers fit too but not tried it myself!

It's possible it would fit, but is it worth the hassle of getting your hands dirty at the scrap yards for sake of £10-£14 + petrol and time? Old rubber hardens with age and may not quite make the seal (if you pardon the pun!)

Somerford Mini has the Elf/Hornet boot seal, about £15. I believe the part number is ALA5464. Steve

Red Riley has found the shipping price to the States about twice the price of the rubber which is why I suggested the Sprite boot rubber.
British Manufacturers/designers in those days used as many "standard universal parts as possible",( particularly BMC) in order to keep the prices down.

Yep! spot on al, my hornet has mk2 golf seal on it and it does not leak!

Okay, anyone who's cut down a MKIII rubber to fit an Elf rear windscreen, how long does the cut rubber need to be? I guess I could just take off the old one and measure, but I want to do the job in one and want to cut and glue it before I take the old one out.

There is no need to glue it. I fitted the rubber to the aperture on mine first, then pressed the glass against it to help keep it in place (fitting the rubber first enabled me to make sure the headling was inside the rubber) the rubber was then cut with an overlap of about 1/8"-1/4" This extra bit of rubber ensures the two end are pushed together making it watertight. !
(Make sure you have a sharp blade to cut it right first time.) I had to cut both front and rear rubbers and so far have not leaked.

I had a friend who's done them a bunch of times help me do it today, and it went in without a problem. I fitted it into the window frame first, leaving a bit of overlap to keep it tight, then I glued the ends together and put in the glass and a new chrome lock strip. The old one wasn't glued at the joint, but the new one that I had to cut to fit was, so I figured I'd go ahead just to be safe. Done deal.
