Boot sealing rubber
Has anyone replaced the boot seal on your car? If so, what did you use and where did you get it?

Re: Boot sealing rubber
I bought mine at one of the shows £12
I have also used www.phoenixminitrim.com for other bits. Their latest catalogue has the price at £3.20/metre and you will require 3.10 metre=£9.92 (Cat REF DX72)
You can mail email them at phoenixsupplies@hotmail.com for postage price to the States. you may mention my name.
I could scan the price list for you (2 x A4 sheets) pm your email address to me if you are interested.

Re: Boot sealing rubber
I sent them an email, but their website seems to be down. Do you know if they're still in business?

Re: Boot sealing rubber
They have mentioned the website had been having problems.
They may take a little time to answer emails,as they are often away at shows. I had some stuff of them about a month ago.

Re: Boot sealing rubber
They actually got right back to me and gave me a price. Problem is the shipping is twice the cost of the seal. I might try to find a source more local to me before I shell out the money.

I know a Midget I can look at to see if it's the same. I have a Sprite, but it's a 59, so no boot lid. Thanks!

Re: Boot sealing rubber
you could always try the scrapyards - i've heard that mk 2 golf boot rubbers fit too but not tried it myself!
Re: Boot sealing rubber
It's possible it would fit, but is it worth the hassle of getting your hands dirty at the scrap yards for sake of £10-£14 + petrol and time? Old rubber hardens with age and may not quite make the seal (if you pardon the pun!)Big_Al_Smith wrote:you could always try the scrapyards - i've heard that mk 2 golf boot rubbers fit too but not tried it myself!

Boot Seal
Somerford Mini has the Elf/Hornet boot seal, about £15. I believe the part number is ALA5464. Steve

Re: Boot sealing rubber
Red Riley has found the shipping price to the States about twice the price of the rubber which is why I suggested the Sprite boot rubber.
British Manufacturers/designers in those days used as many "standard universal parts as possible",( particularly BMC) in order to keep the prices down.

Re: Boot sealing rubber
Yo Red Riley et al
Did you ever source a boor seal for your Elf??
If not, here's another supplier from where I got mine - you could get a quote from them (details on their "Home" page)
Cost price is quite reasonable (£11.27) but who knows what the p&p might be for SC.

Re: Boot sealing rubber
I ponied up for the shipping and got the proper one from Somerford. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.

MKIII Rubber Modification
Okay, anyone who's cut down a MKIII rubber to fit an Elf rear windscreen, how long does the cut rubber need to be? I guess I could just take off the old one and measure, but I want to do the job in one and want to cut and glue it before I take the old one out.

Re: Boot sealing rubber
There is no need to glue it. I fitted the rubber to the aperture on mine first, then pressed the glass against it to help keep it in place (fitting the rubber first enabled me to make sure the headling was inside the rubber) the rubber was then cut with an overlap of about 1/8"-1/4" This extra bit of rubber ensures the two end are pushed together making it watertight. !
(Make sure you have a sharp blade to cut it right first time.) I had to cut both front and rear rubbers and so far have not leaked.

Re: Boot sealing rubber
Tony,
I had a friend who's done them a bunch of times help me do it today, and it went in without a problem. I fitted it into the window frame first, leaving a bit of overlap to keep it tight, then I glued the ends together and put in the glass and a new chrome lock strip. The old one wasn't glued at the joint, but the new one that I had to cut to fit was, so I figured I'd go ahead just to be safe. Done deal.
