Insurance for an 18 year old male driver of a wolsley hornet Empty Insurance for an 18 year old male driver of a wolsley hornet

I have been a member of the ElfHornet register for a year now and I am an 18 year old male who passed his test a month ago. I have been restoring my mums old 1964 Hornet with my Granddad. At the moment it is away being resprayed so it is nearly ready for the road. I have been trying to find insurance for it but I am having trouble mainly I am to young or the car is to old, Also some of the prices I have been quoted are really high and as a full time student is beyond me. I decided to have this car restored as I thought it would be a good cheap car to run as a first car. can anyone give me the names and e-mail addresses of some insurance companies that will give me insurance at a reasonable price.

Hi matey, congratulations on passing your test!
Try http://www.footmanjames.co.uk/ but when they ask what your annual mileage will be, try and keep it to around 3-4K.
Just be honest with them, (no porkies!) .They may be at Himley this Sunday? If you are, come and introduce yourself.I will be on the miniaddicts Stand. Look out for the Bright Yellow sail flag reading www.miniaddicts.co.uk you won't miss the Elf!
Good luck with your insurance.

Hi TONYELF, Thanks for replying I have tried footman james first as it was the one that my mum had on it when it was on the road years ago and they wont insure under 25.

try doing a google search for "classic car insurance under 25" which brings up a few answers and go through the adverts in the mini mags. The other way may be to have the policy in your parents name and you as a named driver - tis the way we used to do it many moons ago. Unfortunately you are going to end up paying an extortionate premium because of age and there is no easy way out of it.

Hope this helps a bit

I went through Lancaster Insurance (0800317586) and have a policy with Allianz. I'm afraid I don't know what their postition is on under 25's but though it might be worth a mention. I have a classic car policy with an agreed valuation, but my car is kept on the road in East London (no garage) and they also include business milage (restricted to 5,000) total. I did struggle to find anyone else who could do all of this on a classic policy.

I also don't have any no claims as I'd always been a named driver on my ex's policies - tho that's not strictly relevant with classic car insurance. All of which make me a bit more high risk than most other members, but it still came in very reasonable - might be worth a try - good luck!

Insurance for an 18 year old male driver of a wolsley hornet Empty Insurance for young male driver

I had similar issues with both my sons with basic 998 cc 1980's Minis. In the end they could only get cover through the likes of Tesco and the costs for Third Party Fire and Theft were still between £800.00 and £1000.00. As suggested in earlier messages, check out the specialist Mini insurance brokers in the Mini Magazines as they may be able to help. I insure my every day car a Mondeo 2.2TDI Estate with Direct Line and my wife has her motor policy with them as well. When discussing insurance for my 18 year old daughter for her Nissan Micra because we already have at least one live policy with them, they automatically gave my daughter a 20% discount last year when she was 17. Her renewal this year with one years No Claims Bonus was under £500.00 Third Party Fire and Theft which is still high but manageable.
The law has changed regarding being a Named Driver on another persons policy unless that person is the main driver so be very careful if considering this route, having said that, putting another older driver with a good clean record as a named driver on your policy may reduce the premium.

Good luck but you may have to settle for just basic Third Party cover until you reach 25 as Classic Car cover is quite restrictive and they will usually ask for details about your main every day car.

Hi Debbie

Have been racking my brains trying to think of a policy I could tell you about as I work for Aviva but I have not been able to find anything. Norwich Union used to do classic car cover but I couldnt find any reference to it on their website - it might be worth calling them though on 0800 092 9564. The only other suggestion I can offer is to try getting the insurance cover through a local insurance broker as they might know of a suitable policy. That was how I got my first insurance for Henry (my Elf) when I was 18.

Good Luck!

Try Lancaster Insurance. Keep your mileage down as Tony says, but also be prepared to opt for a high excess on your care, this will bring the premium down a fair bit

Tony - see you at Himley? I'll be on the Mini Foresters stand!

I've got the Elf insured with Lancaster £180 (I think) 3K-5k mileage Garaged full no claims. With just the missus and myself as drivers but then I'm 64 in August! So hang in there Debbie. You will get there in the end.

I know this is a month old but I've only just got here. I use adrian flux. My quote for my elf value of 1000 quid and 11000 miles a year use, fully comp (granted I'm 39) was 92quid. Give them a try.

But, Zef, you're 39. I have four Minis/Elf insured on a single classic policy for just over £100. I had my '78 insured on its own (until it became old enough to join the others!) firstly with Lancaster then with HIC for around £100. Add my 19-year-old daughter and that became £400 (it's now with HSBC). Her insurance in her own right, on another Mini, is £700 with 3 points and a claim (was £1200 until we did the Confused.com bit, and Elephant came up best this time).

Boys, another matter - just because they're boys! Just added 17-year-old son to my policy and it's now £1250! My daughter has never paid over £700.

However, young drivers, one thing we did find when she went to university, is that you should keep a parent on the policy as a named driver - brings it down loads.
