A LIST OF SURVIVORS ?
Am not so sure about revealing the body (chassis) numbers of our Elf & Hornet survivors !
Believe it or not there are people out there who would welcome such information to clone
or disguise a stolen vehicle. This to make the selling on of a stolen Elf or Hornet easier
for the thief.
Elfs and Hornets are stolen - there have been a number of appeals for help on this site
over the past year or so - placed by owners desperate to recover their pride & joy.
Am I being paranoid ? I don't think so.

YES TO A LIST OF FISHOLOW BODY NUMBERS :
Sorry turbochargedstu, I now understand what you mean....
I was told by an ex-Fisholow employee that their body numbers used prefixes "R"= Riley & the "W"= Wolseley: makes sense -was he correct ?
My Mk.1 Elf was first registered in early January 1963 - manufactured, therefore in 1962.
Fisholow Number R264.
A friend of mine living in Co.Carlow (thats here in Ireland) has a black Mk.1 Elf which was first registered in 1961 -will find out what Fisholow
No.it carries and post it here.

NUMBERS
I'll throw my thoughts in the pot. The earliest cars ( Pre-production ones) were built by BMC so didn't have Fisher and Ludlow numbers. From what I've seen over the years the F & L numbers were on the remaining Mk1's, all Mk2's and Mk3 's until Commission numbers were introduced. I had a look at a friends early 1967 Elf last week and it has a F & L plate but both my late 1967 and 1968 Elf's have Commission number plates but no F & L plates. I suspect Lisa could confirm this. David2010 have you got anymore info on your pal's black Mk1 or have I missed a post about it?

Cheleker and I started collecting all the Fisholow and FE numbers we could find 15+ years ago.
Not sure what happened to his list.

Thanks for the reminder Kev.....I'll phone John (owner of very early Irish all-black 1961 Elf ) to-morrow and ask him to look for the
Fisholow number.

I phoned my friend John to-day and the news on his very early 1961 Elf is not good.
The car was despatched to the crushers last year as it was deemed to be beyond restoration (any attempts at moving it & it broke up ! )
John reported as follows ; The car was grey (not black) & had a damask red roof - added he believes later : he retained the dash-board
with intruments and the two front wings : he has in his possession the original Irish buff coloured log-book : he is therefore, in a position to
supply me with the original engine and chassis numbers : the car carried the early 1961 Co.Carlow registration number IC-9000 :
Readers should be aware that unlike in the U.K. or in Northern Ireland, Registration numbers issued in the Republic of Ireland are non
transferable to any other vehicle so that when this Elf was crushed its very desirable ( and valuable ?) Reg.No.died with it.
As for the Fisholow number - John does not remember ever seeing such a plate on this car - perhaps because it was so early it was
- like the early demonstrator Mk.1 Elfs - built entirely in-house by BMC UK or assembled in Dublin from a CKD kit and was not therefore a
Fisher modified example.

Back to numbers...
I believe the original listing Alex mentions was combined with the master list that Gordon and Lisa were keeping.

NUMBERS - VERY EARLY 1961 ELF - RIP
David, it's a great shame the Elf had to be scrapped but some are just too far gone. A small consolation might be that there were no Grey and Red cars in the Pre-production batch but there are 3 Grey cars other than mine. I really hope it wasn't one of those. My car wasn't registered until October 1961 so I'd be surprised if the Black car was earlier than this. It would be interesting to know if the dash centre panel has chrome trim around it and if the wings were de-seamed at the A panel.

Yes Kev,my friend John is trying to lay his hands on this Irish car's original buff log book which he so carefully filed away - but it will turn up.
It should reveal - apart from chassis & engine nos. - the name & address of the first owner (we don't use "keeper" here) I'm betting that the
first registered owner was Messrs.Brittain Ltd - the Dublin based assembler of CKD Morris & Riley cars at that time & this would make it the
first Elf demonstrator in Ireland in 1961. The car as already stated was grey and the damask red roof was almost certainly added later in the
car's life. The evidence is pointing towards it being a very early example - what a shame its importance was not recognised here.
I will put your 2 questions to John concerning the seamless front wing joints at the A panel and the chrome framed instrument panel -
hopefully I will get answers.

NUMBERS - VERY EARLY 1961 ELF - RIP :
Hi Kev
I've been able to get some more info on the now crushed early (1961) Irish Elf.
Its owner John was certain that it did not have the two distinguishing features as described by you for prototype Elfs.
That is to say it did not have flush seamed A panel joints with the front wings and....
It did not have a chrome surround to its dashboard.
His hunt for IC-9000's original Irish "buff-coloured" log book continues. He is still confident that it will turn up.
Then we can compare both its engine number & chassis number with the other very early non-Fisholow built Elfs.
Watch this this space !

Hi David,
Sort of glad to hear the Elf didn't have the early features. Still interested to hear anything you find out about it. I know there are some other early cars out there. I've got recent pictures of a Hornet with the A panel de-seamed. From experience you always find something while looking for something else so logbook will turn up when not expected.
Thanks for update.
