Another Mk3
Hi there,
Fantastic to see another Mk3 out there.
I am thinking of cataloguing the survivors.
I have a 1969 Mk3 which is pretty original except for a resparay about 10 years ago. SAMk3 has a 1970 which I found in Newlands, although its a Robertson car.
I suggest you get a copy of Ryno Swardt's Book. It's the best historical record of our Mk3s

Jared, Checked the water bottle in the Wolseley 1000. Same as the one you posted; including, the Cape Town markings on the bottom.
Kev, Ryno Swardt?

I've got mine. It will need a good cleaning without ruining the plastic.

Re: AUSTIN MINI MK3
If I remember correctly, there is a product you can use to "restore" old and yellowed plastics. I can't remember what it's called.

Re: AUSTIN MINI MK3
I heard of Oxyclean with peroxide added. Mine is quite yellow, but also has some grease and paint overspray. I'm taking it back to NY with me tonight, and I'm packing it with my carry on luggage. Don't want to lose it if my checked bags get lost. Ha.

Re: AUSTIN MINI MK3
It'd probably be best to post in the build section and make a dedicated thread to the car.
I must say, I've wondered why you've been so quiet - I hope the car is coming along nicely Â

Rear Reflectors
Hi guys,Jared Mk3 wrote:That car was indeed for sale on the internet at one stage, I remember seeing it too. It's nice to see that it has the first generation internal hinged doors, the Mk3 badge on the boot and it's bumpers and over riders. From the pictures, your car has definitely been resprayed, I can tell by the window rubbers for the windscreens. It's also interesting to note the position of the reflectors at the rear. Another thing I have noticed is the the badge on the bonnet, it seems to be one that was fitted to a steering wheel originally. It looks like you have a nice car here.
The rear reflectors on this car are in the correct position. They are fitted to a fairly crude bracket which attaches (I think) to one of the over-rider bolts. My car had them originally but they were lost more than a decade ago during a respray. SAMk3's car had one of the reflectors in place and one was missing. Please send detailed pics of how the bracket fits.

REAR REFLECTORS :
Are Front Reflectors also a legal requirement in the RSA ?
Reason for asking - I'm considering purchasing this machine.
It started life back in 1969 as CFM-35044 in Knysna which I believe is in the Cape Province.

That's a beautiful car.
Yes, white reflectors are a requirement on the front of cars here in SA, while the rear is required to have red reflectors.

Re: AUSTIN MINI MK3
Yes, just like that.
Although, interestingly, car's had to be fitted with reflectors that had the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) logo on them. So, often, the cars had aftermarket reflectors fitted over the standard manufacturer items or had extra ones fitted to the body - a good example of this is SAMK3's car; the reflectors were fitted on the bumper, even though the light units themselves had built in reflectors.

Re: AUSTIN MINI MK3
Hey Devon,
I think my replies to your PM about the reflectors are stuck in my outbox. The car is nearing completion, maybe by sometime in March and we will go for roadworthy shortly after. It would be super to have the reflectors around then. Are you parting with both front and rear? Any thoughts on how much you'd like for them and posting? Thanks!
Mark

Re: AUSTIN MINI MK3
The reflectors are held in place by a small threaded screw on the back of the reflector itself, which fit into small holes on the body both front and back (although some Mk3 cars seem to not have had these holes at the back, but rather small plates on the bumper). If removing the reflectors, don't forget to replace them - legal requirement in SA.

Re: AUSTIN MINI MK3
Well, if you need the rear reflectors for roadworthy I think you might change your mind about selling them to me.

Re: AUSTIN MINI MK3
The rear you might be fine without the reflectors, as the tail lights have them built in (make sure they work at least). The front is the hassle though, there have to be separate white reflectors.

Hey Devon
I have a PM stuck in my outbox for you. Maybe you need to clear your inbox to make room? I would be thrilled if we could make this weekend work.
