Alastair & me in JVG and Steve Bourke with his cousin (in law) Brent Schulte from Canada in his Heinz 57 Crayford Hornet left unreasonably early on Wednesday morning and caught the 0800 ferry from Dover to Dunkirk over a flat calm English Channel. On arriving in Dunkirk the SatNag immediately became lost before we eventually found our way out of town.

After 300 or so miles over a mixture of motorway and some fantastic little roads, we arrived at Koblenz (via the Nurburgring) around 8.00pm and settled down to some well deserved lubrication fluid!

Left Koblenz about 10.30 Thursday and immediately became lost - this time due to the complexity of the road layouts. Again took a mixture of motorway and back roads and after 260 miles we got to Neumarkt at 7pm

Erected the tents and drank a significant quantity of beer out of ridiculously big glasses. Just breakfasted on sausage butties and tea. It's raining and freezing cold but despite that, spirits are good and we're looking forward to a good few days!

IMM 2010 Nuremberg Empty The Sun's Come Out!

Post  Tim Smith Sat May 22, 2010 1:12 pm

Friday was wet and cold. Had a mooch around the displays and stalls - lots of minis/mokes etc., but not too many Hornets/Elfs - so far seen a German Elf & a Scottish Elf and our two Hornets, that's it.

The Hungarians were very nice - bidding to hold IMM 2012 - they had a petrol tank full of schnapps that was more volatile than the petrol it replaced! They were giving it away and it was very nice after the third or fourth!

There's a chap selling new old-stock hydrolastic displacers still in BL boxes for 450 Euros each (!) and all the usual other bits and pieces.

There was almost an international incident last night as the Poles had reserved a large area for some late arrivals, but about 17 Brits arrived from Norfolk and moved in instead, (possession being nine tenths of the law and all that). The irony was not lost on us, as at first it appeared that Poland had invaded Germany, but then England invaded Poland in Germany! Anyway, after lots of armwaving and shouting it was all resolved reasonably amicably.

Friday night was freezing and Saturday started cold and foggy, but the sun's just broken through and it's starting to warm up a bit.

IMM 2010 Nuremberg Empty If JVG was a horse, it would have been shot by now......

Post  Tim Smith Tue May 25, 2010 10:47 am

After the sun decided to come out and a couple of pleasant days was had at the IMM, it was time to come home.

A plan was constructed, a route was planned and a 'Formule 1' hotel was booked in Liege in Belgium for Monday night. This meant an early start as it's a fair schlepp from Neumarkt to Liege at 45mph!

We were up early (well, Steve, Brent and me were up early!) packed up and gone by 0845. We opted to avoid the motorways where possible and took some glorious roads in magnificent scenery, but even the motorways were great, as being a Bank holiday, there were no trucks on them at all!!

Anyway, we were just out of Koblenz heading towards a small town called Mayen on the finishing straight (with a just mere 150 or so miles to go) and struggling up a longish hill in 4th. Now for the whole trip, 3rd had been very tempremental with the synchromesh knacked and it was only selectable by judicious double declutching - sometimes it was completely AWOL which did present the occasional problem going up a hill in a car fully laden with camping gear and two fat blokes.

Al was driving and attempted a DDC halfway up the hill, but was not judicious enough and it all went horribly wrong. After a series of graunching noises and the terrible sound of gears grating against each other and not engaging, the engine stalled and we stopped.

After a bit of head scratching, we pushed it to the top of the hill and it was apparent that it was in a gear, either 3rd or 4th and that the clutch worked. So we got in, started up and rolled down the other side with the gear engaged. It soon became obvious that the car was firmly stuck in 4th and no other gears were selectable. After getting stuck at a couple of sets of light and having to slip the clutch using obscenely high revs to get going, it was obvious that for us the war was over, so we surrendered and parked....just outside a bar!

After a very British brief fairwell of strong handshakes and stiff upper lips Steve and Brent manfully carried on without us. Al phoned the RAC to play his Joker - Overseas Breakdown Insurance! Sure enough two beers and one pizza later a big shiny breakdown truck arrived along with a big not so shiny German breakdown bloke who took one look at the car and said words to the effect of "What the f@%&'s that?", but in german. We explained that the car was British and very old but unfortunately the GeerenBoxen was Kaput. "Ach so. You're f@%&ed then!" he pronounced confidently...but in german.

He winched JVG onto the back of the trailer and drove us back to his yard at Bassenheim before dropping us off about 1km away at a hotel that the RAC had arranged for us, arriving at about 2015. The whole process from calling the RAC to the first beer at the hotel took less than 3 hours and at every step, the assistance provided by them was absolutely first rate.

Steve & Brent meanwhile got to Liege OK, but then became hideously lost so stopped to ask the way. It is a testament to the power of nice old cars that people are prepared to help - the folk they asked made a bunch of phone calls to family and friends, found where the hotel was and someone came out in their car to guide them to the hotel!!! Bet they wouldn't have done that if it'd had been two blokes in a Mondeo!!

Anyway, it's Tuesday morning and having breakfasted well, me & Al are in the hotel room (he snored all night!) waiting for the RAC to call us with details of hire car arrangements for our onward travel. JVG will be repatriated separately in due course.

Now. Who's got a spare GeerenBoxen?

well chaps and chapesses, we made it home, thanks to a magnificent service from the rac overseas breakdown peeps (cannot recommend them highly enough), though JVG is still currently a pow in germany. i have heard today that he will be repatriated on mechanical grounds through the red cross and should be back here within the next 10-14 days (fingers crossed)
