Nimue and Elf in hungary
Hi Mates,
I have bought an MkIII Elf a few years ago and drove it home (2000kms...).
This very car was a gift to a wife onece upon a time in 1968 for a 5th wedding anniversary. The happy Lady kept the car as long as 35 years. After it she became unable to drive and gave it to his nephev. He started to "tune" it but at a questionable manner . Fortunatly he had lost intrest and sold it on ebay. Here I came! I wanted to present the car fully restored to my wife for our 5th wedding anniversary , but life had a different story to tell us.
Now I am restoring the car, but will sell it at the end as 4 children needs a major transport vehicle .
I am now 70% percent ready with the car. It is just starting to show its beauty...
All-in-all: hi everybody - BMC forever!...

Re: Nimue and Elf in hungary
I am looking for a good condition powder blue rear seat (at least upper seat cover) for the car. Does any of You have one?

Re: Nimue and Elf in hungary
hi, welcome to our forum - your car looks good - much better than my "Rusty"!
good luck with it.
good luck with it.
Re: Nimue and Elf in hungary
i wish Rusty's pile of new panels was that small!
not even the front parcel shelf escaped the rust!
this was one of the better bits:

Fine...
Rust and holes are not good to have, but we had the worst time with low quality repairs - double work...

295 head with 1.25inch SU Carb
Your thoughts re using a 1.25inch carb with a 295 head is not really going to improve the performance as the small carburetter will restrict the potential power available. Unless you really wish to keep your car looking standard, this modification will make little difference. If you go for a stage 1 kit with later 1.5inch carb/inlet manifold and improved exhaust system then you will improve the standard 38bhp to around 50 to 55bhp with improved torque (don't bother with twin 1.25 inch carbs as these won't produce any more power than a 1.5inch carb and will need regular balancing and tuning). If you do decide to go for this upgrade, you will need to put the car on a rolling road where the Carbon Monoxide (CO) levels can be checked across the rev range under load and the best needle can be selected. Its a bit of a black art as no one car is the same. Don't just fit a richer needle as this can cause serious damage to the engine if running too rich as this can cause premature piston ring wear due to "Bore Washing" (unburnt petrol diluting the upper cylinder lubricant) which will result in excessive oil consumption. I have gone through this painfull and expensive exercise and need to rebuild my engine after only 1000 miles.
I hope this helps and if you need more information, please ask.
Andrew

Re: Nimue and Elf in hungary
Thanks Andrew!
You're completly right in all You've said, butI am realy willing to keep the HS2 as an issue of originality. The 12G295 will give 6-8 hps extra I hope, and I dont need more. I dont want to "tune" it any higher. Just wanted to give the car some more flexibility. This is a cruising type of car, not a street racer in my mind .
i always tune my cars on the dyno, but mostly have a starting point needle. Now i dont even has a clue on it, as it is not realy a way people do modifications... Just thought if only any of You have a similar setup...
My other idea was to go for an HS4 and modify it to take the HS2 fillter case. But it is a bit tinkering.

Just put the standard carb and needle on the 295 head and get it on the Dynomometer/Rolling road as soon as you can. The engineers running the tests will be able to determine the best needle profile for your car.

Re: Nimue and Elf in hungary
I will put it on the dyno, but as always, it will be me who will work on the carb as our guys are inexperienced with SU tunning - I live in Hungary You know they have not seen much of theese cars .

It's looking VERY good and yes it is Florentine Blue with Old English White roof. A superb spray job there.

Re: Nimue and Elf in hungary
yes, i agree - very nice looking paintwork and definitely florentine blue. hope you enjoy bolting all the bits back on.
Re: Nimue and Elf in hungary
Thanks for the kind words (though distance is good for the car, it is far from perfect).
Anyway, i like the color, and if You say it is Florentine Blue, than I am fully happy.
Bolting it together is a joy for me. I am a lego-kind of man. Building is much better than driving the car once. I will try to prepare the car for mid june... errrr... this year... or maybe...

Wow nice! And this is my favourite part of the resto. putting the pieces back and counting how many mysterious extra nuts and bolts go missing or end up as extras. Enjoy!

Re: Nimue and Elf in hungary
Theres always some bolt, nuts screws and what have you left over! Most annoying, and worrying too!
I was scared I might scratch the paintwork while putting everything back and Bu**er me I did! the spray man sorted that out fortunatley!
Good luck with the rebuild
