Rolling over.....
Hi does anyone out there have a cunning plan, when it comes to rolling the elf over onto its side for much welding??

or you can buy them off ebay

The other two option I've seen are rool it onto an old matress (not so great if you're welding), or get hold of a few old tyres, lay them on the floor and roll the shell onto them.
I quite like the one posted by Jay#2 part way down page 1 of the thread below as it uses readily available builders tressles (£30) and hardly any other steel. Seems pretty cost effective.

Re: Rolling over.....
i am in the process of making a rollover jig for the elf restoration, it will utilise the front and rear bulkhead holes, along the lines of a spit roast system, when its finished i will post some pics on here for all to see, total cost of materials will be around £40, better than laying on a cold floor in the middle of winter

Re: Rolling over.....
i got an old mattress from the council dump and made a nest of old cushions and pillows round the edge, then with the help of three friends, we lifted the shell, tipped it over and laid it on the nest so that most of the strain was taken round the outer parts of the roof so avoid it denting the centre - welded up one side, then got same three friends to pick it up, walk it outside, turn it around and back in for the other side to be done. Beer is good currency for bribing friends!

But you've got to be careful you don't end up with bits welded on the wrong way up.Big_Al_Smith wrote:i got an old mattress from the council dump and made a nest of old cushions and pillows round the edge, then with the help of three friends, we lifted the shell, tipped it over and laid it on the nest so that most of the strain was taken round the outer parts of the roof so avoid it denting the centre - welded up one side, then got same three friends to pick it up, walk it outside, turn it around and back in for the other side to be done. Im afraid this idea is not for me, with all that material around, its a time bomb waiting to go off, one stray spark and the whole lot goes up in flames, and welding, grinding makes a whole lot of sparks,
