What to use to clean/restore leatherette?

I am just wondering what you guys use to clean the leatherette on your padded dash/sills? I was thinking of using shoe polish or something, maybe even that paint-on sort, as mine is a little faded in parts. But I thought I'd ask here in case anyone had any tried and tested methods. If not, I will have an experiment in an inconspicuous area first, as they say in all the best instruction leaflets!
