Rear bumper
Tony
You don't. You have to sand back to bare metal. I have done this on some smaller items but not anything as big as a bumper.
This isn't an issue if I'm going to do a home repair. Holding fire at the moment, I've been given details of someone who may
have a spare.
Anyone know the thread and length of the large over rider bolts? The heads sheared off (rusted solid) and had to remove the
remainder of the thread on the bench, so will need some new ones.

Reply from Colonnade Metal Finishers
Without seeing the bumper ‘’in the flesh’’ it’s difficult for me to give you a price. However, I would say that you could quite easily be looking at as much as £350.00 to repair and chrome.
Turnaround based on our current workload would be 6 weeks.
Price excludes VAT and delivery.
Kind Regards,
Graham Dormer.

Re: Rear Bumpers
Has anyone ever tried contacting this company to see whether they could supply a rear bumper in stainless? My understanding is that the Elan+2 bumpers were the same or very close to the Elf ones.

I have now contacted 3 companies trying to get bumpers made. None of them are interested as the tooling up costs are so high, they are doubtful there would be enough customers to recoup the costs.
Interested to know how the Lotus angle comes out. According to the tech specs of both cars the Lotus is 12mm wider. A friend of
mine has a S2 Lotus, one problem could be that they are not designed to take over riders, but with the design of the Elf ones, may
not be a problem.

Thanks. I have asked about the condition of the bumper, awaiting reply.
The good news is that the lot is not that far from home so collection should be easy.

I've had a punt on that job lot too, but I think it will go beyond my (very limited) budget
If someone on here is the high bidder then that would be great

My budget, or should I say my daughters, isn't that limited. If I'm lucky enough to win it, I'd be happy to offload
some of the stuff we don't want, to other forum members. I'm restoring a moggie minor and don't want to clutter the garage too much.

Good egg
Not sure what I'm gonna need yet, as I haven't yet got the car But rest assured that I'll probably be posting appeals for parts on a semi regular basis

Re: Rear Bumpers
I think you'll find ready takers on a few of those bits - me included. With regards the rear bumpers, Frankie's is very scabby so I'd be interested in re-chroming too, maybe if there is enough of us we can go as a group and negotiate a better price?

Price is going up. Over £200. Yes, the rear bumper on ours is beyond scabby, which is why I'm after this lot.
Agreed, a group approach may save money, but having spoken to a lot of the repairers/chromers, I doubt it.

Re: Rear Bumpers
As previously stated, I don't know where I stand yet, but is it worth seeing how many people would be interested in a small run of remanufactured ones?
That way, provided folks were willing, we could make an approach with a reasonable number in mind?

Re: Rear Bumpers
Alan,
I had a reply from Harringtons!! No plans at present to manufacture bumpers.
Group buy is a good idea, we should start a thread and see how many interested parties I would prefer
Stainless Steel to chrome for the longevity
The lot on ebay for in excess of £200 does not make financial sense to me as you have got to consider that the chrome is 40 years old and will eventually if not in the near future need to be re-chromed.
Willochrome £40 per foot for re-chrome of bumpers but do not carry out repairs and do not know anyone that does.
I am in the position now that my back bumper has a hole in that was discovered in the
de-rust/ de-chrome process. And at present have no alternative

Re: Rear Bumpers
evlin64 Sorry to hear Willowchrome cannot do repairs, I was lucky with my rear bumper, they found a slight twist and srtraightend it out for me, they also filled a slight dent with chrome.
Surely in your case you could find a competent welder to weld up the hole and grind it down for you?

Likewise, I had a negative response from Harrington.
To me the lot on ebay, even if it goes up to £300 it would make sense. I have been quoted more than that just
to repair the bumper I have (without croming). If the bumper is solid and OK, it will do a turn and at least the re-chrome
would be cheaper than that combined with repairs. Not to mention you have all of the other bits in reserve or to sell on
to off set the cost.
I have now heard back from 4 different companies, all saying that they are not interested in remanufacture, no matter
how many you were going to order. It is the initial tooling cost that is the problem. I get the feeling that you would have to
order 3-400 to make it worthwhile then setting up the machinery. Therefore the cost to us would be huge, unless everyone
with an elf/hornet wants one or two.

Hurrah
I was the winning bidder on the job lot of Elf spares. I just hope the bumper measures up to the description.
Hoping to collect in the next couple of days.
I will take a few days to sort through and decide what to keep, but will probably be putting some bits up
in the For Sale thread shortly. I'd rather do that and have the go to someone who needs them rather than
put them on ebay.

Rear bumper
Just finished fitting the rear bumper, sorted out the number plate lights. The only problem I have is that I am missing one of the chrome coachbolts which holds the bumper to the body seam. The previous owner had cross threaded it, and it stripped when I removed it. Anyone know of a good supplier?

Got a front & rear set of chrome domed bolts from Rupert Fish a while ago...why not "Make contact with seller"???

PS before these came along, I made my own by modding the head of a 1/4 unf screw (tapering it and tapping it!) and screwing a bathroom mirror domed screw cap into the bolt. - I still have them on my front bumper until the next chroming session!. The mirror caps (B&Q) don't rot either as they're made of brass.
