My Supercharged Hornet
This picture was taken when i first got the car after it was off the road for 15 years:
The car has since been fully resprayed twice, with two sets of front wings and numerous new panels:
This was the car down at Lyme Regis Cobb before the respray:
Here is the supercharger conversion almost complete. I have not bought a kit, all parts have been designed and manufactured by myself or a friend.
This is a picture of the rapid protoyped model of the crankshaft pulley designed by myself on 3D CAD:
Under the bonnet is the Eaton M45 Supercharger, duplex timing gear, lightened flywheel, hif44,1275cc (actually around 1311cc with the decompression plate), LCB exhaust, minisport superflow exhaust.
The body is now fully restored and resprayed with a factory britax weather shield sunroof, old english white with black roof, fibreglass double skin doors now 4kg instead of the usual 20kg. These are very high quality made in three sections and bonded together by myself so not the usual rubbish only suitable for the race track!
The chassis is now fitted with dry suspension, hi-lo's, Koni Sport dampers direct from the factory in Netherlands, dunlop alloys with Yokohama A0008's. Think thats about it!
Let me know what you think?

Re: My Supercharged Hornet
excellent job - with very little detriment to the appearance of the car - a proper street sleeper. What kind of performance are you getting from it now ( had a look at the original spec's the other night and a hornet/elf should have a maximum speed of 74 mph from a 998 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no I'm not going to slow down either)

To be honest the car doesn't have a lot different top speed due to the diff which I believe to be 3.4:1. It does about 100 mph although I'm planning to rebuilt with a 3.1 diff which should give around 110 with 10" wheels but more importantly a nice cruising speed.
The acceleration is great, although this is probably due to lack of turbo lag and boosts up to around 1 1/4 bar at 102.7 hp and 190 odd Nm of torque.
I'm looking to rebuild an old 1293 engine I have with low compression pistons and uprated bottom end, along with a mappable management system when funds allow.
If anyone knows of a decent crank, rods, pistons etc then please let me know.

Re: My Supercharged Hornet
road wise I don't tend to see top end speed as particularly important, but how much fun you have getting there is - there are only so many points on a licence - let the modern box drivers get nicked for speed and we upset them at the lights as well - double whammy
Must admit I am quite interested in the principle of this conversion as I am hopeful of stuffing one on our 6cyl land rover as it is seriously asthmatic in the manifold department and is probably going to be easier using forced induction than trying to modify the manifold to get anything near significant flow rates. Must admit I would like to play with the prototyping kit as well - it fascinates me how using a laser and polymer you can create intricate 3D objects, I would probably just sit there staring at and giggling to myself for hours on end as it created useless object because I could !!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW what was insurance like to get on it - and problems ?

Hi Gordon
I agree about the top speed but its cruising speed which are nice and with all that torque and 10" wheels the acceleration is awesome anyway (it will happily spin in third in the dry!). I'm hoping that the 3.1 diff will provide slightly less hairy acceleration and make 70 mph achievable at a lower engine speed.
The rapid prototyping machine is awesome, however it does seem to be another one of these machines which allow anything to be designed, even if it would not be practical in reality!
Insurance wise I use footman james, who were very good. I told them about the supercharger and they asked what increase in power it had given. I said it had doubled the power (from the standard 1300) and they said it would be an extra £30! What a bargain.
One area which was a nightmare was the belt tensioner which I ended up using a Golf 8V GTI unit, after that all was well.

current goings on
Well after a winter being layed up it was time to dust off the hornet and see what problems needed fixing.
Sadly the engine had suffered some severe issues while in Oxford hence having to make use of that free recovery offered by footman james!
After inspection this weekend a compression test showed some pretty conclusive results ranging between a slight fluctuation in pressure to around 80psi in cylinder four (after the supercharger was removed and the original manifold and carb being fitted).
This led me to remove the cylinder head, finding that both head gaskets and the decompression plate had been damaged. So a new gasket was ordered and then fitted the next day, with tappets needing adjustment due to the decreased cylinder head height.
So with the engine back together it was fired up and all is well again, leading to a quick jaunt over to the anchor in seatown for a celebratory shandy in the sun!
This evening I have purchased a set of forged low compression pistons (capable of withstanding 300hp) which will be used eventually on an engine which I am building.
This means for the time being that the hornet will be back to the old spec (1275, fast road cam, lightened flywheel) to allow this new engine to be built with programmable ecu, straight cut gearbox, the previously mentioned pistons and the best crank which the budget will allow. As you can imagine this will no doubt take some time to save up for / build.
Hope everyone else's projects are coming on nicely....

Hello Everyone!
I hope you are all well.
Sadly I had to sell my Hornet a couple of years back to pay for my studies.
I don't suppose anyone knows of its whereabouts do they?
Regards
Olly

Re: My Supercharged Hornet
I know exactly where it is.
I bought it from the lecturer you sold it to at Bridgwater College, after he abandoned it as a project. Stripped with the intention of restoring it, it sat under a tarp in the carpark there for quite some time. A classmate happened to mention he'd seen a strange looking Mini under a cover so I went and investigated. Quick version is we eventually did a deal and I dragged it home.
Put all the glass back in, hung the doors and it's now gone on to a friend in Yeovil.
The signed V5C is on my desk waiting to be posted to the DVLA as the deal was concluded two days ago.

I remembered the car from one of it's first outings to the Thornfalcon Show when it was still at Hatch Beauchamp.

Oh yeah, that was some time ago.
Thanks for getting it back together, it's nice to think it'll be going to a good home!

Re: My Supercharged Hornet
Hi all thought i ould give an update.
Eliza is still not on the road due to me loosing my Job and having to find a new one. I am now re settled and working on her again. Most of the electrics are working now. Im in need of a new wiper motor and thinking of upgrading to the self parking one. Im in the process of installing a speaker system and stereo. The car doesnt have one atm and as much as i love the sound of an A series i need to be able to listen to something else! Its a DB system with bluetooth pairing for hands free phone calls and pairing for music. I have opted for windscreen aerials as opposed to driling holes allover the place! I have tested them and they seem to work well! The body shell is done too. I had quite a bit of time between jobs and used the time and fantastic weather to work on the paint finish and make her look better. The jobs i have left are:
Install a heater system,
Get the engine running,
Repack the CV Boots and re clip them,
Tighten steering rack,
Test gearing actually engages,
Prepare for a MOT test!
I WILL GET THERE SOMETIME!!

Re: My Supercharged Hornet
In lieu of exterior antennas, I've been using a hidden amplified electronic one that you can simply lay in the car, behind the dash or wherever. Mine's under the rear seat, and it works fine.
