VTEC 68 Elf
This is the ongoing project of converting my 68 Elf into a USA interstate highway cruiser. I'm having most of the work done by MiniTec in Royston, Georgia. I plan to finish up the interior after I have the car back from them. I might have posted these on the old site, I can't remember.

Re: VTEC 68 Elf
Looking good so far. what stage you at this moment in time?
Are you putting all the chromework back all round? This takes some time (and a LOT of patience!) Especially if like me, you have put all your "bit's" in a safe place and it took me ages to find them again after two years! LOL
You probably will need extra cooling grills to keep the vtec unit cool with the temps you have to contend with in the States.
Good luck, keep us posted

Making progress on the Elf build! Well, the shop's making progress, I'm just writing lots of big fat checks.
Notice anything unusual?
Yep, twin tanks on an Elf!
The arches will be the only real change to the exterior.
Yep, that's a Honda VTEC going under the bonnet! Wheeee!
Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Re: VTEC 68 Elf
It' looking great all the time. I found my rebuild most satisfying (probably because I did it myself) It took me a long time as it was so long between starting and finishing I had forgotten where all the bits where LOL
I have sourced a 7.5 gallon tank to replace the standard 5.5? gallon tank but have found I will have to reshape the top of tank to allow the boot hinge to close over it. Has anyone else done this ? If so how did you do it?
My tank has been powdercoated and I don't want to spoil it!
Why have you got !0" written on rear side windows ?
See other thread re boot rubber

You may have to modify the filler neck as well ! - the angle of dangle is different to a standard mini - the only way I am afraid is to cut and weld, not the best thing to do on a petrol tank unless you are a confident welder, and rinse it out well before you start for obvious reasons

I don't know if the disease has spread to UK, but over here, the "in" thing among a certain crowd is to put their big old granny cars on body blocks to see how much tire will fit underneath. Like this:TONYELF wrote:Why have you got !0" written on rear side windows ?
And it's not enough to put those huge ugly wheels on the car, you have to make sure to post a sign to tell everyone just how big you got it.
So, it was sort of an inside joke that no longer applies, as I'm changing to 13 inch wheels. Just haven't gotten the razor blade out yet to clean it off the window.

Look what this guy had to do to get his taillight to clear. He is using Land Rover Freelander lights.
The cool thing about my right hand tank is that it's made of HDPE plastic. I bought it from Paul Gulson in Australia. It has a steel filler neck that slips over the plastic neck and they just cocked it at the proper angle and used an epoxy type material to bond in place. Worked a treat!

Elf Progress!
Just visited the shop today, and they're promising me it will be ready in 4-5 weeks. Just a few bits to finish up and I can get it back on the road!
Not my shop! I wish!
I think the arches add some muscle, without going too extreme.
Look, no more hydrolastic fittings! No more pumping up, no more sagging, dripping, or swearing.
Notice the blue road coils peeking out from the subby?
Just needs an intake and radiator. See the AC pump at lower left? Cool breezes! Now I can drive with the windows up!
My new Riley wheel centers from Classic Capsule. Sweet!

Re: VTEC 68 Elf
It's looking really nice and smart now.
I looked into the possibility of spring suspension but find the ride is good at the moment, It's the padding in the seats that needs attention and the fact the seats are non reclining mmmm maybe one day I'll do something about that!

Re: VTEC 68 Elf
I sat in a Mini with Mazda Miata seats yesterday and I've decided that's the way to go. They fit nicely and seem very supportive. Attached to the original mounting points, they both tip up and tilt forward.TONYELF wrote:It's looking really nice and smart now.

Probably not called a Miata in UK. Same car as the Mazda MX-5.Big_Al_Smith wrote:car's looking great - never heard of a maza miata though - google here we go....

The project looks suberb!
I think that the honda route is great way to gain bullet proof reliability with excellent performance as well.
Keep up the good work.

Re: VTEC 68 Elf
My thinking exactly. I want a car that is exciting to drive, (British) draws lots of attention (British), and starts and runs every time without a hassle (Japanese). So I get the best of both worlds.hornetob wrote:I think that the honda route is great way to gain bullet proof reliability with excellent performance as well.
Oh, BTW, it's VTEC, not Vtech. (Picky Picky Picky)

silly me, should really know that one!
What size engine have you gone for? My friend had the 1800cc unit in his honda and that was pretty fast even in a big car so the Elf should shift!

Re: VTEC 68 Elf
It's a D15B VTEC. 1500cc and 130HP. Should get the car down the road quite nicely.hornetob wrote:What size engine have you gone for?
Edit: I thought they were doing a D15B but it's actually a D16Z6, so a 1600cc rather than a 1500cc, similar HP.

New seats are on order.
I found a Mazda Miata (MX5) salvage dealer (breaker), (Flyin' Miata) (pretty cool stuff! Check out their V8 conversions. Wow!) that had a set of tan leather seats, and I'm going to dye them to match my Cardinal Red interior. Should be very sweet when done. The seats are being sent and I should have them in a few days. I've done a prototype modified boot board to fit with the new twin tanks, just need to make sure it fits and mod the Newton carpet kit to fit it. Now I'm looking for a set of Mini or Metro door pockets with the speaker pods so I can wire up my sound system. I have speakers on the rear parcel shelf, but I want to do a 4 speaker system with a bass pod under the rear seat. It's coming together! The shop promised me that I could pick it up Feb 13 at the latest.

Re: VTEC 68 Elf
Cool I've just got my seats out to restore hopefully for Bingley Show.
The Mazda seats sound like the bees knees. may consider something similar for Myvanwy. (got a 1275 for that but if a VTEC unit comes along in the meantime mmmmmmmmmmm who knows?)
Lets have some pics asap when you get the seats in!

New Grilles
Here's a pic of the custom aluminum grilles that will be covering the new openings in the front panel. I'll polish them up nice and shiny.

There are no mods to the body other than the extra cooling openings in the front panel and the wheel arches. Standard length and normally opening bonnet with a D16Z6 Honda VTEC motor. Cool, huh?
