Elf trailer
This:
And bits of this:
Are going to become this, or at least as close as I can get it:
Should be another one of a kind outcome, if I can get it to work.

Re: Elf trailer
Okay, so here are the basic ingredients for the trailer project.
If nothing else, it would make some cool garden art.
I'm pretty sure this is going to work.........
Unless I can find another bumper, I may actually have to fix this....
Approximate bonnet placement.

Re: Elf trailer
Cool but methinks you may have too much weight on the towball (max 70 lbs?)

It should be almost evenly balanced after I cut off the remaining bits of the door frames and floor (the green cut line behind the door frames and the the lower part of the panel about three inches up from the bottom will be cut off.) I think it will be okay, and if not, I'll adjust as needed. Removing the subframe and swing arms made it much lighter. I'll be using an open channel box frame with a light weight trailer axle.

Re: Elf trailer
If you are going to cut out the doorframe altogether then you may just make it balance. If not, why not increase the length of your draw bar, that would lessen the weight wouldn't it?

I'm sure I'll get it all figured out when I get to that stage in the project.

Re: Elf trailer
I meant to say it would lessen the weight on the tow ball.ie the longer the lever the easier it is to lift.

More puzzle pieces
Okay, the 'Alf Elf is temporarily mounted on its new frame. Still a bit of cutting and welding to do at this point. I'll be putting in a new floor and sills once the front end is welded on. It will eventually sit much lower. I need to flip the axle over the springs to lower it a bit more then raise the floor over the frame rails. It will eventually ride on 13 inch wheels to match the car, but these 12 inch trailer tires are the proper diameter for now.
I could hire it out as a rickshaw, but watch your step, those cut edges are SHARP!
The door frames will be completely cut off. (Notice the vertical cut line two inches behind the door jamb)
The red frame rail at the front will be just behind the front panel when closed up.
Still a bit of the window frames left. I'll be cutting it off at the top of the body line before fitting the front wings and bonnet.

Getting to the right height
Okay, I've lost almost two inches of height by flipping the axle over the springs.
That's a bit closer. Only need to lose about two and a half more inches. I'll get that by boxing the floor around the frame. When it's done the seam on the rear valance should be just at the bottom of the frame.

Looking nice so far, I'm sure it will be ok. Just wish that was all I had to worry about at the mo!

Getting closer
Right, so I've done some trimming down and fettling on the front panel for approximate positioning.
This is very close to where the front will end up. I'll be bringing the front sill seam up to meet the front seam and I'll fab up a new valance to close up the front and come around to the side, similar to the rear valance (which as you can see is sh!te. Anyone got an extra one they want to send me?)
I'll have this much space to fill. I figure a donor hood (bonnet) from a big fat American SUV should provide enough material to shut this up after I remove the rest of the B pillars and the package shelf. I'll build in a couple of vertical braces front and rear to strengthen this area and give me a place to mount the reworked boot and bonnet hinges. I think there will even be enough space here to mount a small custom roof rack.
Now how cute is that going to be?
I love it when a plan comes together! I still have to build a new floor, and once the frame is boxed in it will sit a couple of inches lower, so the draw bar will eventually come through the front valance just under the front plate brackets.
This was my original Photoshop mockup. I think it's going to be pretty close.

you can knock up one pretty close to the original by using van/ pick-up rear valance/ quarters - much cheaper than spending 200 quid on a repro elf one to find that it badly made.
keep up the good work

I hadn't thought of that. Are the van corner pieces the proper length?

who are you paying 200 quid to ? - kevins(or is it keith?) is about 110 and it is a good fit. But yes the van panels do make a passable rear valance, but they are not as deep as the proper ones (cheaper to post though as they are in bits). Someone was on about producing them in fibre glass on here if you search
That trailer is going to look interesting
Re: Elf trailer
Gordon you are spot on with your price and its Kevin at Bradford Mini Spares AKA Rupertfish on eBay if you need one. It looks as though it is a single steel pressing and looks close to the original in profile and finish.
I have a Mini van valance on my Elf and it does the job but the bumper hides it from view. This was fitted by a previous owner.

He has them pressed from a mold taken from a new original valence, so they are as close to original as can be. I doubt you will get better unless you are very lucky to find an NOS one. I have one of his on H and it went on great. The only down side is they are big and bulky and expensive to send

This one is the best trailer I have ever seen - found it on Sunday afternoon and got to speak with the owner.
