There are probably at least that many Mk II and III 1966s in the U.S., and for certain none of those are counted.

Thanks Phil. I'm sure I'll catch up with you at some point (either in the MGB or the Elf ! Wink )
It would be nice to have a pic next to yours - a kind of "before & after" thing ! Very Happy

That would be a great idea, will keep you informed how im getting on.  More of less finished the main chassis on the front of the car, will now remove the body to build the rear section.. will get there in the end.

Decided to make a modification to the Boot Board today to make life a little easier. Smile

When I bought the car a previous owner had already installed a battery cut-off switch on the floor of the boot just infront of the boot lock catch. .........  This was a great idea and a good way of quickly isolating the battery / anti theft device.  Cool   but the way it was done meant lifting the Boot Board to get access to the cut-off switch.  No problem when the boot is empty but a pain if you have a boot full of various bits and tools !

The solution ???

Make a hinged panel for easier access without having to empty the contents of the boot first !

Works well so far but time will tell when I have a full Boot  affraid

Decided the Elf needed some TLC to the bodywork (more than I really wanted to tackle myself!) so its gone to my local bodyshop that I have been using on and off for the last 25 years to have the "holy" floor section cut out and replaced, the roof rubbed down to get rid of some 'orange peel' and paint runs that are annoying me, Crying or Very sad and the crack where the window frame meets the door panel on the drivers door (to see if that will finally solve my water ingress problem ?) affraid

Hopefully that will make it look better and be a little more 'weatherproof' (as much as a "Mini" ever can be that is !!!) lol!

Got the Elf back from the Bodyshop today ready for another local Classic Car Show tomorrow. Cool

Roof looks much better having been rubbed down and polished to get rid of the "Orange Peel" effect.

No more "Holy" floor as problem section cut out and replaced with a new floor panel and the door to window frame crack on the drivers door has been welded and strengthened so that the door now presses evenly all around the new door seal so hopefully that should stop any water ingress that was happening before.

Small repair done to inner sill behind the sill carpet and seat brackets strengthened on the drivers side as they were a little 'stressed'.

Now I have it back I can get on with the 101 little jobs still left to do !!! Shocked

Had a few "little" jobs to do today .........

I noticed that the engine was moving a iittle around the top engine steady bar so decided to change the worn out, split, rubber bushes for some harder wearing 'Poly' ones. All the nuts and washers were nicely greased up from whoever fitted them last time so removal was easy with no "drama's" !!!.

This is the state of what was removed .......

Cleaned and gapped the plugs and cleaned the contacts inside the dizzy cap and leads as well as giving everything a good soaking in WD40 so now I know the electrics are sound.

Then found a suitable sticker for the rear offside window ........

Post  boris710 Tue Aug 04, 2015 8:57 pm

Decided today was the day to sort out a few gremlins in the Elf's engine bay so it was up on the ramps, bonnet off and remove the Carb to see just what was happening with my 'bent' Red Jet .......

1st job - remove the carb

On closer inspection the choke lever seems to operate the Jet ok - not sticking and freely moving through its full travel.
I also removed the needle to find out that its marked up as an "RO" type, which is quite short and 'richer' than the standard needle.

Looks like the 'bent' part may just be the result of some excessive heat from the Maniflow exhaust manifold having an effect on the red plastic section of the Jet ???
I will change the Jet anyway as I dont want to risk it 'melting' any more but as the "RO" needle looks straight and undamaged I'll probably refit it while weakening the mixture off to see what effect that has on the rather high fuel consumption that I'm getting at the moment.

While I had the bonnet off I had a couple of other little jobs to do so I cleaned up the Radiator top tank back to polished Brass - looks much better than the scabby black paint that was on it !

Then it was the "Guinness" Coil cover ........

Will probably leave the Elf as it is now till I can get the correct "Red" Jet replacement part cos I dont really need to put it all back together just to remove it all again later !!!

affraid

Do you have the right intake manifold; i.e., one with the Mini angle between the carb face and the head face? Any signs of the jet hitting the firewall; especially, when the choke is out?

I know what you mean but the "bend" in the red plastic part of the Jet is away from the exhaust manifold and there is plenty of room between the Jet body and the bulkhead box section. The inlet manifold is correct as the carb sits in the correct position when fitted but since its a Mini Engine bay - space is very tight anyway !!!

The only thing I can think of is that there has, at some point, been excessive heat from the exhaust manifold which has caused the deflection in the red plastic part of the Jet.  Either that or whoever fitted the carb fitted it with the Jet already in that condition ???

Its a wierd one for sure but the jet operates correctly when operating the choke lever and does'nt 'stick' at all so apart from being cosmetically 'strange' everything 'works OK.

The car has been running 'rich' as there were sooty deposits on the Spark plugs before I cleaned them last week.
Since then I've given the car a bit of a run of 50 miles or so, so need to pull the plugs again to see if they are still showing signs of soot.
I have a feeling that I assumed the 'bent' Jet to be the cause of the heavy fuel consumption where it might well be the case that the problem was that the mixture setting is just too rich. ???

Decided to start on the repaint of the 1275 engine that will eventually end up in the Elf.  If nothing else it will get rid of all the dirty oily crud and make it look a little better ?

Made a start with the head and clutch housing sections

"Mutant" project - 69 Mk3 Riley Elf - Page 3 <a href="Mutant" project - 69 Mk3 Riley Elf - Page 3 1275%20engine%20paint%201" />

and after a day sitting in the sun, listening to music with a paint brush in hand  .....

Only the first coat of at least 3 and still to paint up other brackets and parts in either black or silver but its a start ! bounce

Block and gearbox will be next to be cleaned and painted ...................
