Having not driven a car with the sliding windows, what are pros and cons of each type? What do people prefer?

Sliding Windows vs. Roll Up Empty SLIDING WINDOWS V ROLL UP :

Post  David2010 Wed Sep 25, 2013 2:53 pm

Sliding windows : FOR = generous storage available in lower door compartments :
AGAINST = don't even think of visiting an automated (rotating brush) car wash !!
= the external driver's door hinges over time wear and start to droop - drivers door needs regular re-alignment.
= a Mini's sliding windows can be opened by a thief in seconds using a steel ruler or similar implement.

Roll up windows : FOR = door hinges last longer & door alignment therefore is not a recurring problem.
= automated car washes not a problem (i.e.that does not mean that your car can't be damaged - but not flooded).
= windows can be opened by a car thief but are more challenging than the simple sliding window.
AGAINST = very limited storage room in doors.

Having said all of the above, I must confess to a personal preference for the Mk.I & Mk.II Elf & Hornet.
You see, over time you can perfect the exact amount to open the leading &/or trailing window on your (driver's side) to give the car a unique & very acceptable brand of fresh-air conditioning.

Do the sliding windows make much noise when closed?  open?  I'm guessing there are ways to mitigate the security concerns? Do they leak in regular rain storms?

I always liked the sliding windows as thats what the original minis were designed with to maximise the space.

I always felt a need to open the sliding windows ALL THE WAY!! Unfortunately...that isnt' possible. Sometimes opening a window half way...isn't enough!!!

Exactly, even Issigonis himself never like the change to wind ups. The first incarnation of the Mini was like a tardis and needed little improvement. As for noise and security, not really an issue with Minis, they're all noisy and easy to nik ! Laughing

being only 5'4" tall, I don't think I would really need the extra space provided by sliding windows. Smile

One of my reasons for dislike of the English style roll-up windows is something that won't bother you. The taller you are (i.e., the farther back you sit) the more likely you are to take a beating from the incoming wind when the windows are rolled down and you're driving at moderate to high speeds. One can get very good ventilation with sliders without that problem.

That likely wouldn't be a problem for me. Whenever I take my daily drive in for service at the garage, the seat is always adjusted back.
