1968 ELF MK3
Hello everyone well I said I would start a project thread for my Dad and as we have done a few bits to her to tidy her up. The entire car is going to be stripped back to bare metal. And resprayed we are thinking Persian Blue, with powder blue interior and carpet. My dads first car was blue and it seems to be his favourite colours for Elfs aswell.
This is her, we got it of Minifix who were selling it here in Dublin, selling it as a project as it had seemed to be sitting up for a few years and neglected by the previous owner. As you can see she has been painted before BRG which I don't really like and the lovely red interior was dyed from Red to Black. Ruined it really, I think originally it was like Ali's elf'd Faun Brown with the lovely red interior.
Being laid up has'nt been good to her. So we have bought replacement sills, two front floor pans, 2 A-panels and boot lid as they are all rotten.
Heres the interior.
so to get the last of the show season over here out of her mainly Dunboyne Motor Spirit we have redone the Steering wheel, interior vent, tidied up the carpet, and cut back all the dead paint with a mop to give it some sort of shine again.
The ran is running great with no crunches so when i drop the subframes we will refeshen up engine with paint and new seals.
We also have started the dash sourcing veener was hard so only re applying it this week so will add more photos later
Anyway she currently looks like this great improvement on when we bought her.
Inside looks nearly new with repainted steering wheel, carpet pity the dash was'nt finsihed but will add more updates soon
And outside the paint after being cut with compound has got its shine back

Hi Guys,
Hope to meet you both at Dunboyne next Sunday 29th.
As I sold my '63 Elf & '66 Hornet last April, I shall be driving my '65 Morris Mini Cooper.
I'm entered for the Parade Laps Session as car no.24.
Make yourselves known to me or my co-pilot Ray next Sunday.

This looks like it'll be a good project - good luck! I'm liking the look of that Clubbie Estate too.

Strip down has begun
Finally this week myself and Dad have started to strip the Elf for its rebuild.
So interior is out, we stripped the front half of the wiring loom and is out of the car, Took off all the lights and stuff from the front. Also started to take engine bay apart.
So wiper motor, voltage stabiliser, alternator, Radiator is out. Going to take then engine and gearbox out this week aswell
Have the interior ordered from Newton Commercial as well noticed a few more rust spots then first thought but we have a good welder/ painter so when it comes back will be nearly nicer then the day it left factory in 1968.
Have decided on Persian Blue/Snowberry white combination for exterior colour. My Suspicions were confirmed and BRG was a repaint some years ago. We believe the original colour was Faun Brown/Cream roof. Like Ali's Elf but are looking forward to the blue think it really suits the car and I am yet to see a Blue elf at any show here in Ireland.
More updates soon.

Persian Blue / Snowberry White Elf :
I haven't ever seen that precise shade of Blue & White Elf in Ireland Stuart ( & I think that colour combination is pretty unusual for an Elf anywhere else.)
However, there is one example whose photo appears from time to time in the Classic Retro Rally Magazine " Old Stager " which is
a U.K. publication with 6 issues per year (and to which I am a subscriber). The Elf in question competes in a number of Retro rallies
in most years in the U.K. - and as it is a very photogenic Mini - it gets photographed more than most.
I have asked this magazine's editor to please e-mail me a photo & to permit me to post it here.
Will let you know what develops ! (no pun intended).

Think I may have found it on this website forum or riley motor club it is good to know and where I came across the Persian Blue combination. I also found it quiet hard to get any photos or a blue elf so it must have been a rare combination but I think it really suits the car. I believe it is something like this below. I found this on an Ebay ad some time ago and think it is Persin Blue
Any here are some snaps of the dash it was in a bad state as you can see from earlier pictures but Dad got new veener and repaired any small lumps or chips that it had and it looks as good as new. I really think he should do this on a ongoing basis as he has a knack for it.
This was some spare veener trying to decide what colour to stain the dash. Think Oak may look will with the Blue Interior

After a lot of digging I think I may have that photo for you.
Apologies for not very good quality but many thanks to Simon Marks who took the picture(s) and to the " Old Stager " Magazine April/May 2008 edition. This car is owned and driven by a lady - Ali Green & her co-driver on this occasion was Ann Locks.

colours of blmc cars
was there 2 types of blue/white combo's in the elf, mine are both this shade of blue,1 maybe a bit darker, and the other abit like baby blue, both have snowberry and old English wite roofs.
il have to get pics up.
when there in the light there very close in colour, they are the same as in the pictures shown above.
the larger pictures show the elf in what id say was pagent blue,a colour a lot of mini citys were painted around 1979/80/81.
keep us posted on every move.

Hi Stuart, yes unfortunately the Cooper is very sick. Nasty electrical problem somewhere. I spent a week and a half trying to find it with no luck. Time to admit defeat and hand it over to the experts (Paul and James). So both the Cooper and the Elf are there now. I'm on the lookout for a Mini Estate to buy to drive while both cars are being finished.

The Welding Paint
Yeah get them out for a photo shoot would be great to see them. Yeah am eager enough to get going on it hoping to take it to IMM Next year. Have a touch of OCD I think cause I like to get things done yesterday. Tony who owns Trimtech is doing the paint and welding. He has had quiet a few minis down there recently. He is a great painter it come back flawless they take the same time to paint a small car as a big one so no runs in the paint. He also has a welder down there who is phenomenal seems to be able to fix everything you give him. He remade a set of Clubby estate doors and them look better then new. Will keep you posted
Stuart.

Welding updates
Was up at Trimtech today to collect the subframes and the glass. Car is coming along great the passenger side is completely finished, new inner and outer sills are on aswell as a-panels, footwell and few repairs on the wings. He has started on the rear on the car repaired all around the floor and bootlid. When the home made box section sills were taken off there was nothing there apparently. See photos below.
New sills
old sills or what was left of them behind the box section
will get few snaps up of the wheels and subframes before and after powder coating

Interior has arrived
Got a few bits from Newton today. Carpet, Headlining, visors etc. Really like the Blue carpet think will be nice colour combination with the paint. Also I dropped the Subframes and wheels down to the powder coater. Threw the spare wheel out of the clubby estate in aswell never liked the yellow colour it was painted by previous owner.
