MG Mini - MG badged booted Mini? Empty MG badged booted Mini?

Post  Red Riley Wed Mar 09, 2011 6:59 am

Does anyone have any knowledge of a surviving prototype of an MG badged version of our little cars? Someone posted a comment in the Booted Minis group on Flickr.com saying that he had seen it in some of the Mini magazines and in the MG Safety Fast magazine. Anyone want to prove or bust this information?

He was probably getting confused with the MG1100/1300 which to the untrained eye or uninformed could resemble a Riley Kestrel or even a Wolseley Hornet. I have often had people come up to me and ask if MG did a version, or if there was a Vanden Plas.....

If you keep digging, you'll find fairly recent photos of an MG-front saloon. It shows up now and then, but I've never seen a factory booted version.

I was aware of this car at Gaydon, but I can't find anything on any other MG/Mini prototypes.

He refers to Jon Pressnell's book "Mini-The Definitive History." Anyone have a copy?

Yes, I have a copy in which it refers to (page 77) amongst the Elf /Hornet information. Accompanied by one illustration and a photogragh of what is described as At least one MG mini was actually built by BMC-and this escapee is the evidence. based on a 1960 or 1961 export Mini that became a factory hack,it has been restored by an MG enthusiast (Richard Howard) there is a strong worded copyright note at front of book so, sorry no photo.(unless you want me to go to the gallows!)

I will describe it as best I can.

Exactly the same as the Elf/Hornet with the additions of

Roof aerial in front of a leather? sunroof
MG badge in lieu of the Riley badge
Cooper style bull bars
Two spot lights (mounted on body between indicator grilles and radiator grill)
Colour Lime green metallic (I think)

That's the one I was referring to. Thanks. Forgot about the photo in Pressnell's book. As I also mentioned, add to the "exactly the same....except" list, the all important difference of no extended boot. One could argue that it and the Wolseley 1000 look more alike than it looks like an Elf or Hornet.

Okay so it's based on an early saloon and NOT a booted car like the beach car. Does it have an Elf or Hornet grille or something else?

As the owner of many, many MGs over the years. The car in the picture is a Pininfarina design, it is based on mini running gear, front wheel drive.
There is a very similar car designed in house and designated ADO34 and dates from 1959. This is also based on the mini. Issigonis called it a "dreadful thing". It was killed off when the Mini Cooper was announced. I have read just about all of the MG books on the market and out of print, and don't know of any other mini variant. The in house version is similar to the Pinin version but has two part oval sidelights and wider lines on the bonnet. Otherwise it is very similar to the car at Gaydon. I have a front on picture of the in house one, but it will need to be scanned, if you are interested. I'm not sure if the prototype for ADO34 survives.

I found this link whilst searching ADO34

Mini variants
Go to the sports car projects page, then the link to ADO34,35 and 36

Found a few different versions, a couple I had not seen before.....you learn something new every day

I'm looking to contact the owner if anyone knows him as I'm putting a display of unusual Elf/Hornet or related cars on at the MCR National day at Beaulieu in June to celebrate the 50th (I've even invited the beach car owner). Any help gratefully recieved.

Pete

PS a few more unusual cars on a thread I started here......

mgcc@mgcc.co.uk

Try contacting the MG Car club, it has been going for about 80 years and they have huge archives and records
of production, pre-production and prototype cars.
